CHARLES GOODE, LONDON.  A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE SMALL STRIKING LANTERN CLOCK WITH ALARM. CIRCA 1690.

A very fine and remarkably original small lantern clock. The clock retains its original verge escapement, although some repairs have been done to it and, therefore, almost all the movement is untouched apart from minor repairs.

The dial is nicely engraved with triple point half hour markers and the centre is signed for the maker ‘Cha. Goode, London’ and has a monogram above 6 o’clock which has been noted on many of his clocks.

The clock retains its original hand and alarm disc. The front top fret is nicely engraved but of a fairly restrained style and the two original side frets conform.

Height:   9" (23 cms.)

The maker Charles Goode is noted as becoming a Free Brother of the Clockmakers’ Company in September 1686. He took a number of apprentices during his life and, although little is known of him after 1714, he is reputed to have died in 1730. There is an interesting article on this maker, and in particular the monogram, which appears on this and several other of Goode’s clocks written by Paul Tuck in ‘Antiquarian Horology’ Winter 1988 page 610. Further information is available in the Summer 1989 ‘Antiquarian Horology’ on page 197 and in the ‘Antiques Trade Gazette’ on the 1st July 2000.
