F. BAETENS, LONDON. AN ATTRACTIVE MANTEL TIMEPIECE WITH A BRONZE AND ORMOLU CASE. CIRCA 1820.

An attractive ormolu and bronze mantel timepiece. The case, which is very slim from front to back, stands on gilded feet and has applied ormolu swags to the front with oak leaves and fruit culminating in ribbons. On top of this are further foliate clusters and two prancing bronze horses with their front hooves resting on the drum in which the clock is mounted. This is surmounted by a gilded eagle. The quality of the bronze work and castings is high, as one tends to expect on English mantel clocks.

The 4" enamel dial has Roman numerals with outer Arabic numerals at the quarters and is enclosed within a well cast and gilded bezel. It has moon hands.

The eight day chain fusee movement is signed for the makers in two places, as is relatively typical on these clocks, the first being the back of the front plate at the side and also at the base of the backplate. The signature is ‘F. Baetens, London.’

Height to top of eagle: 12.5" (32 cms.)

Width: 14.5" (37 cms.)

Depth of case excluding pendulum which hangs at the back: 2.5" (6.5 cms.)

The makers F. Baetens specialised in figural mantel clocks, very often timepiece only and always of fine quality. They are noted as working in the first part of the 19th century.
