WILLIAM SANDWITH, LONDON. AN EBONISED BELL TOP STRIKING BRACKET CLOCK.CIRCA 1790.

An attractive and well proportioned ebonised bell top bracket clock, the case of typical form with the bell top surmounted by a brass carrying handle and with four small pineapple finials in the top four corners. The sides of the clock have glass viewing panels. The front and rear doors with arched glass apertures and well cast and silk backed sound frets in the top corners. The plinth of the case standing on brass ogee feet.

The dial has a silvered chapter ring with a well matted centre and gilded cast spandrels to the corners. In the arch inside two further spandrels is a silvered round signature plaque signed for the maker, ‘William Sandwith, London.’ The blued steel hands have heart shaped cut outs at the tips and interesting fretted apertures.

The eight day bell striking movement has four nicely knopped pillars and a verge escapement. It has twin gut fusees and strikes the hours on a bell mounted above the backplate. The backplate is engraved with floral swags and a stylised fruit basket.
