31463C.W The case although some 18" high appears much smaller than that as it is topped with a nicely shaped urn with swags and the main body of the clock is, therefore, only some 14" high. It is adorned with foliate and ball swags and finishes in an acanthus leaf casting with foliate scrolls and berries. It retains its original fire gilding which is in good condition. The pendulum can be viewed behind a glass panel at the front below the dial and there are nicely chased sound frets backed with silk to the sides. The dial with Roman main numerals and Arabic outer numerals is signed for the maker ‘Le Paute H.Du Roi’ and has finely chased gilded brass hands. The 14 day verge movement has external countwheel striking, its original verge and utilizes a small silk suspended pendulum. The round plates are flattened at the bottom and the wheel work is of the typical high quality one finds in 18th century French clocks. The mainspring is scratch dated 1765 |

The Le Paute Family were an important Horological family and were working in Paris from the 18th century through to the beginning of the 20th century. The business was run by two brothers from the late 1750s through to the turn of the century. They were Jean Andre Le Paute and Jean Baptiste Le Paute. Also associated with the business was Jean Joseph Le Paute and his uncle Pierre Basile Le Paute. The company was Clockmaker to the King, hence the signature on the dial. Jean Joseph Le Paute was also Clockmaker to the Chamber of Deputies in 1821.
