31408C.FM An extremely attractive early French mantel clock. The gilded bronze case in the form of a drum shaped movement enclosure held between foliate encrusted supports and topped by a quiver and a torch enclosed within a foliate garland. The white marble base with inset gilded bronze panels stands on six adjustable bun feet. There is a domed glass to the front and a straight glass to the rear of the clock case. The 14 day movement has round plates with a foot at the bottom. It is nicely signed for the maker, Charles Le Roy, on the backplate. It employs a large count wheel mounted on the backplate and strikes the hours and half hours on a bell. The wheel work has very fine crossings and the four pillars are nicely shaped. The convex dial with Roman numerals and Arabic outer numerals is again signed for the maker, Charles Le Roy á Paris. The nicely cast and chased hands are of gilded brass and retain their original mercury gilding, as do the main parts of the case. |

| The main springs on the movement are signed,
"Richard," and dated 1778. It is nice to actually have an exact
date of manufacture for such a clock. It is also interesting that the main
springs are original and still in fine order.
Height: 12.75" Width: 11" at the base. Sold Charles Le Roy was a noted maker and was working in Paris between 1770 and 1790. |
