J. SLEIGHTHOLM, LONDON. AN EARLY ENGLISH DIAL CLOCK WITH A 10" DIAL AND SMALL DROP TO THE CASE. CIRCA 1790.

An extremely attractive and rare 10" English dial clock. The mahogany case with only a very small amount of wood showing round the edge of the well cast brass bezel and with a very small drop case which is unusual given that the clock has a shortened verge pendulum. At first we were suspicious of this but having been right through the clock we are satisfied that this is how it started life.

The small 10" silvered dial is particularly attractive having a very flowing signature for the maker, J Sleightholm, London, together with Roman numerals and Arabic repeat numerals.

The eight day fusee movement with verge escapement has triangular shaped plates and four nicely knopped pillars.

Length:  13.5" (34cms.)

Joseph Sleightholm was apprenticed to Samuel Bagley, watchmaker , St. James, Clerkenwell in 1766 and it is recorded that he was working in London during the late 18th century.

Price band: C
