A MOST UNUSUAL FRENCH EIGHT DAY WEIGHT DRIVEN STRIKING SKELETON CLOCK WITH FULL CALENDAR WORK.CIRCA 1820.

A highly unusual skeleton clock. The clock takes the form of a central movement with four separate dials above which is mounted, via a knife edge, a gridiron pendulum and to the sides are two silvered columns surmounted by engraved and gilded globes, one being a celestial and the other a terrestrial globe. The columns have pulleys at the top over which the gut runs from the main barrel of the movement and there are two weights running down each of the pillars. The clock stands on a mahogany base which has canted corners with shaped moulding to their base. The whole is covered by a purpose made brass edged glazed cover.

The movement has a main clock dial with Arabic numerals inside which is a central seconds dial. Below that are three skeletonised enamel dials for the month, day of the month and day of the week. The moon shaped hands are of blued steel. Below those three dials mounted in the mahogany base is a lunar age dial with a nicely painted classical landscape.

The movement plates are very reminiscent of those used by ‘Verneuil’ and other French makers, being in the form of an inverted ‘y’ but with a central long tail. It has some unusual features including blued steel pillars and steel main barrels. It has a pin wheel escapement which is a form of deadbeat escapement. The striking train has a count wheel mounted on the back of the barrel and strikes the hours and half hours on a bell mounted on the base behind the movement.

This is one of the most unusual skeleton clocks we have seen for a long time and must have been made by an interesting and good maker but there is no sign of a signature anywhere on the movement.

Height without glass cover:   25" (63 cms.)
