CHARLES LE ROY A PARIS. AN IMPORTANT STRIKING ORMOLU CARTEL CLOCK. THE CASE SIGNED BY THE RENOWNED BRONZIER, OSMOND. CIRCA 1770.

The ormolu case surmounted by an urn with ribbons, swags and a female mask above XII. The case is stamped on its lower edge, Osmond.

The convex enamel dial has Roman numerals and Arabic minutes and is signed ‘Charles Le Roy a Paris’ to the centre. The gilded hands are delicately pierced and engraved.

The substantial movement, with original anchor escapement, strikes the hours on a bell. The mainsprings are dated 1764.

Robert Osmond was born in 1711 in Canisy near Saint-Lô. During his apprenticeship he became one of the premier bronze casters and chasers in Paris, working alongside Philippe Caffieri. Robert Osmond became a Master in 1745 and he passed away in 1789.

There are two other similar examples, one in the Royal Pavilion, Brighton and another illustrated in ‘La Pendule Française’ by Pierre Kjellberg page 194.
