31032C.BAR. This barometer, with architectural top and central finial and attractively turned cistern cover inlaid to the centre with bone, has a fluted border with herring- bone stringing. At the top of the shaped and silvered barometer scale is the maker’s name with decorative engraving above it. To the left are the usual indications from Very Dry to Stormy whilst on the right the barometric pressure is indicated with a slide to record the pressure at any particular time. On the body of the barometer is a silvered scale with mercurial tube to indicate the temperature 0° - 110° with Freezing, Summer Heat etc. Above and below the scale are oval shell inlays set on a green ground. The barometer tube with glass cistern is concealed within the relatively shallow trunk of the barometer. Length : 38" ( 97 cms.) HENRY LOMAS. Both a Lomas and a Henry Lomas, almost certainly the same person, are recorded by Nicholas Goodison in ‘English Barometers’. He mentions a very similar mahogany stick barometer with broken pediment and thermometer on the trunk which is in Adlington Hall ( National Trust ) and a second very similar one but with the register plates protected by glass. Adlington is a town some six miles north of Wigan in Lancashire. |
