FINDING OUT MORE ABOUT YOUR OWN CLOCKS AND THEIR MAKERS

Whereas in the past we have been happy to give people advice on their clocks by way of the Internet, we regret to say that, because of the very large number of requests now being received, we are no longer able to do so; but we can make a few suggestions.

The starting point is books which can be obtained from your local library or purchased. Out of print titles can often be obtained from Horological book dealers (see Horological Links).

The old favorites are:-

Britten, F. J.         Old Clocks and Watches and their Makers.

Baillie, G. H.         Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World.

Loomes, B.          Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World.

Loomes, B.         The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain.

  Tardy.                   Dictionnaire des Horlogers Francais.

Mercer, T.            Chronometer Makers of the World.

Banfield, E.         Barometer Makers and Retailers.

Kochmann, K.   Clock and Watch Trademark Index, European Origin.

Today there are many regional books which are useful for further information and many specific books on particular makers and types of clocks.

Your regular specialist Horological book dealer should be able to suggest suitable titles, but please remember that they are book dealers and are in business to sell books and not just give the information that they contain.

The Guild Hall Library in London holds The Worshipful Company of Clockmakers and the Antiquarian Horological Societies collections of books.

Local and specialist museums can be of help, also your local meetings of clock and watch societies such as the AHS, BHI, and NAWCC (see Horological Links).

Doing your own research is demanding and time consuming but it is very rewarding.

       Good Luck.
